Tanzania Weather and Climate

General Climate

Tanzania enjoys a pleasant, tropical climate with significant regional variations influenced by altitude. The coastal regions experience the hottest and most humid conditions, while other low-lying areas like the western and southern parks are also hot but less humid. The interior regions are milder, often with cold nights. Tanzania has two distinct seasons: the Dry and Wet seasons.

Arusha’s Climate Compared to Tanzania’s Parks

Arusha, located near many of Tanzania’s northern parks, has a mild climate. The peak rainfall in April is significantly lower in most parks compared to Arusha. The Ngorongoro Crater rim, due to its high altitude of about 2,300m (7,545ft), receives substantial rainfall and is very cold in the evenings and mornings. Lower-lying parks such as Lake Manyara, Nyerere (Selous), Mikumi, Ruaha, Gombe, Mahale Mountains, and Katavi are warmer than Arusha.

Dry Season: June to October

During the Dry season, there is minimal rainfall, and the humidity is very low. Nights can be cool, especially during morning game drives in open vehicles in the northern parks.

  • June to September: Afternoon temperatures range between 20°C (68°F) and 30°C (86°F), varying greatly by altitude and location. Expect clear skies and sunny weather.
  • October: Marks the end of the Dry season. It gets hotter, and the first rains bring relief.

Wet Season: November to May

The Wet season features consistently hot afternoon temperatures (around 30°C/86°F), though it is colder at higher altitudes above 1,300m (4,265ft).

  • November & December: Known as the ‘short rains’ period, rainfall is regular for about a month. The timing can be unpredictable but usually does not heavily impact safaris.
  • January & February: There is often a break in the rainy season in the northern parks and coastal areas, though other parks do not experience this dry spell.
  • March to May: The ‘long rains’ period, with heavy daily rainfall and high humidity, particularly in the southern and western parks.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

Many travelers visit Tanzania to witness the Serengeti’s great wildebeest migration. This migration is closely linked to rainfall and occurs throughout the year, with wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elands, and impalas seeking fresh grazing and water. The migration follows a fairly predictable pattern, making it possible to view it year-round by knowing where to look during different times of the year.

Tanzania’s Climate

Situated near the equator, Tanzania has a tropical climate with a long dry season and two rainy seasons. Northern Tanzania generally experiences milder temperatures compared to the hotter and drier south. The coastal regions are the hottest and most humid. At higher altitudes, temperatures remain mild throughout the year but drop significantly at night.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Dry Season (June to October): The best time for game viewing, with dry and pleasant temperatures. The wildebeest migration is in full swing by June, with July offering prime views of the famous Mara River crossing. August is ideal for game viewing across Tanzania, including large herds in Tarangire and Ruaha National Parks.
  • Short Rains (November to December): These rains typically have minimal impact on travel plans. The landscape begins to turn green, and it is a beautiful time to visit, especially for bird watchers.
  • Long Rains (March to May): This period sees heavy daily rain, particularly in the afternoons. It is not the best time for trekking or visiting some parks, but the wildebeest rut begins in May.

Temperature Variations

  • January to February: The hottest months, with high temperatures and humidity. Ideal for beach vacations.
  • March to May: Temperatures start to drop as the long rains set in.
  • June to October: Cooler and drier, with temperatures between 20°C (68°F) and 30°C (86°F).

Weather by Region

  • Southern Tanzania: Experiences longer rainy seasons, from December to March, with the dry season lasting from June to November. Proper planning is crucial as some camps close during the heavy rains.
